I do love all the pretty things, bright colours, florals, animal print & sequins, but the fact of the matter is that basics are the foundation for a great working wardrobe.
Once you have established your basics, these pieces will see you through the year - they are "basics" so cross seasonal and with some layering, adding current seasonal trends and a splash of your own personality (yes Helen, that's the bright prints!) you have THE best working wardrobe for your lifestyle to take your through all seasons, all year......and no more "I have nothing to wear"
Think about that amazing skirt you have, you fell in love with that colour or print didn't you? You got it home and then thought what do I have to go with it?
Well first off, you want versatility - the skirt cost you X amount and you want to rock your money's worth as much as possible.
Grab your "basics" tee or singlet, ballet flats, sandals or sneakers - casual summer done!
Grab your "basics" denim jacket - cooler days in Autumn / Spring done!
Grab your "basics" blazer or leather jacket, your ankle boots and a statement necklace - Night out done!
Grab your "basics" sweater, shirt or tee, denim jacket, boots, opaque tights & a scarf - Winter look done! (maybe add some merino underneath depending where you are and how much cold you feel!)
So there's your skirt getting its debut and encore...….again and again!
Here are some pieces I believe are great basics for a starting point. Depending on your budget there will be styles similar in most stores that will suit.
1) Denim Jacket
2) White camisole or singlet
3) Blazer or Leather jacket (both if your budget will stretch) - you can totally do faux leather too if the price tag on the real deal looks scary - but bear in mind, a real leather will last you for YEARS, so think of it as an investment piece (that's what I tell my husband!)
4) Jeans. Depending on what style you prefer, your body shape and size will determine your go to jeans. I would suggest a high rise jean in a darker wash - high rise makes legs look longer and a darker wash makes legs appear slimmer. Win - Win!
5) Sneakers or ballet flats
6) Ankle Boot (if budget allows, have a peep toe for warmer season and a closed toe for winter.
7) Plain white tee (or off white/cream if you have a warmer skin tone). https://shineon.co.nz/products/betty-basics-manhatten-tee-in-white
8) Lightweight sweater (keep the colour to a minimal - think neutral tones and avoid a print for this piece)
9)Black Pants (just something extra if you want coverage but not feeling the jeans that day)
10)Accessories & extras- sockets (for your sneakers), scarf, statement necklace, opaque's.
The opaques I go to every winter are Bonds thermal tights - amazing! Also this past winter I came across Max fleecy leggings and tights - they look great but I had already got my Bonds stock in....next winter I will try Max!
I hope you found that helpful and maybe got you thinking more about your next purchase.
I have added some ideas below to give you a starting point.

Helen
